Marta, the medieval village on the lake
Created by Rebirth S.p.A. in collaboration with architect Alberto Lisoni, where history meets contemporary design: a conservative architectural project that restores life and dignity to the village’s historic fabric.
Perched on a tufa promontory overlooking Lake Bolsena, Marta is an intact medieval gem: ancient alleyways, lava-stone architecture and panoramic views over the largest volcanic lake in Europe.
Here history is not a museum, but everyday life. The fishermen’s boats, the Festa della Madonna del Monte, the Clock Tower: a village 315 metres above sea level, overlooking the water for two thousand years.

Two thousand years of history
Phoenicians, Etruscans, Romans: every civilisation has left its mark on this promontory overlooking the lake. The first certain historical record of Marta dates back to 726 AD
Etruscan Origins
The area was already inhabited in Etruscan times; according to some hypotheses the name derives from the Phoenician «Marath». Its position on the Marta river made it a strategic trading centre.

The village is a limited traffic zone (ZTL), but about 500 metres from the reception there is a dedicated, secure car park. We’ll give you all the directions on arrival.
